Background

We are a large, friendly practice, with a list size of 10,500 patients. We have five GP partners and one managing partner, as well as three salaried GPs. We often have two trainees at one time.

Our aim as a practice is to provide high quality, evidence based care for our patients. We are a forward thinking, innovative practice, keen to adopt change, and are well supported by our team of professional reception and nursing staff.

Dr Kate Day, Dr Vicki Purser and Dr David Harris are our qualified trainers in the practice and each have different skills and experience, aiming to provide a diverse learning experience for our Trainees. All the other Partners in the Practice are also happy to do tutorials or ad hoc teaching sessions, in their areas of expertise.

The Trainers

Dr Kate Day

Kate qualified from Bristol in 1994 and has been with the practice since 1999, initially as a salaried doctor and then as a partner in 2003. Like Vicki she has just completed the GP trainers course. She shares responsibility for paediatrics with Dr Wood and also has an interest in palliative care. She also chairs the practice meetings keeping the other 7 partners under control!

Dr Vicki Purser

Vicki qualified from Nottingham University in 2003. She has been working at the Practice since 2008, and joined as a Partner in 2010. She is a keen teacher, having done her Certificate of Medical Education, and is also a Training Programme Director for Coventry and Warwickshire VTS. She does family planning at the Practice, along with Dr Reynolds, fitting nexplanons and coils. Vicki has more recently become the Practice Lead for commissioning, and is learning fast!

Dr David Harris

David graduated from Warwick Medical School in 2009, qualifying as a GP in 2014.  He has worked at Forrest since qualifying, becoming a partner in 2015.  He has developed his interest in teaching taking on medical students from his old medical school and foundation doctors for teaching at the practice since 2015

What We Offer Our Trainees

Our Trainees can expect an enjoyable learning experience, encountering true General Practice. Trainees are made to feel part of our team in a well supported environment. We have a good reputation with Trainees, so much so, that quite a few of our FY2s have come back to us as ST3s.

We offer our Trainees an in depth induction programme, which includes spending time with each Partner consulting, and designated IT tutorials. There is also the opportunity to spend time with our primary care team, if the Trainee wishes. We provide our Trainees with equipment and a bag. Once the Trainee feels confident enough, they will start seeing patients alone, but will always have a designated Partner for each surgery, who is approachable for any queries or advice. As confidence grows, our Trainees usually start doing home visits, which is often quite an enjoyable experience. Only later in their Training, when the Trainee feels ready, we will look at involving them in our on call rota. This will never be more than once a week, and they will always have a GP to contact for help or advice.

Our Trainee will have protected learning time for tutorials each week, and also lots of opportunity to film and analyse consultations. We also hold fortnightly clinical meetings as a Practice, discussing hot topics and reviewing our clinical practice. All of the above allows our trainee a great learning opportunity, helping towards CSA and AKT, as well as qualifying as a confident, independent GP! To date, all our trainees have passed their exams first time........
